This subject is close to my heart, crafting a legacy worth inheriting, and as such will be less of a how to and more my own thoughts on its importance and why a legacy is so important to consider. The concept of a positive legacy is the lasting impact that a person has on the world after they are gone. It can be the difference they make in the lives of others, the causes they support, or the values they uphold that are carried on by those that succeed them. Leaving a positive legacy is imperative because it allows a person to have a lasting impact on the world and make it a better place for future generations. Having children of my own has brought much of this into vivid focus.
Investments can be a powerful tool for supporting a positive legacy and capital deployed to various endeavors can have a lasting impact on individual communities and the wider world. For example, investing in companies that align with my values and supporting causes I care about, such as transparent government or education, has been a major focus of mine for some time now. While doing good works individually have their benefits, communities and organizations often have the ability to create and foster positive results on a far larger scale than any individual is capable of.
Actively trying to leave a positive legacy gives a person a sense of purpose and meaning in their life, as well as a feeling of accomplishment and fulfillment when visible progress has been made. It can also inspire others to make a positive impact and create a ripple effect of positive change, which I have seen firsthand in the reflections of my own children. Striving to leave behind the most positive impact possible can help to build a reputation when others are able to see the results of your generosity and dedication. And make those others more willing to accept and trust the systems left in place after their creator is no longer there to cultivate them.
Fostering and creating a culture of sustainability within the system wherever possible can help ensure that it continues to thrive long after the creator is gone. Emphasizing the importance of responsibility, as well as encouraging the development of new leaders who can carry on the good works, is also pivotal to crafting a worthwhile legacy. Thinking about succession planning can help ensure that the system continues to have strong leadership and direction even after the creator is no longer involved as well. Identifying potential successors, as well as establishing a plan for how leadership will be transferred and assets distributed.
In conclusion, as my father once told me: “Brick by brick we build our castles. And while it is good to be the king, a person should never forget how they got to where they are. Or what they will leave behind for those that follow in their footsteps.”
